Windows 8 How to Skip/Bypass Metro UI to Boot Directly the classic Desktop Interface

As, many of the regular readers of this blog might know, I am not a very at all happy with what Microsoft have turned Windows 8 into. I am still firm with my opinion that Windows 8 could have been a refined version of Windows 7 with many performance improvements, new Ribbon UI in Explorer, improved Task Manager, decreased boot-up and shutdown times etc.., but Microsoft decided to shoot them in the foot by stitching the ugly looking Metro Garbage into it and replace the beautiful Aero Glass with classic white color scheme.  One of the biggest complain I hear from Windows 8 users is, about how ugly Metro UI looks and is almost unusable with Windows 8. I've been running the Windows 8 Release Preview for quite some time and although I'm okay with no  Start Orb visible but I hate how I get to see   Metro see the new ugly interface by default every time I boot and  I have no desire to see a full-screen Start Menu when I log into my PC.   Unlike ...

Metro UI now available to download for Android Tablets

Metro UI on Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8 is very unique, but if you are on Android tablet you cannot experience it. But its release for Android tablets has made it possible, ' BroBot175 ' from XDA developers has designed and released Metro UI for Android tablets giving them the Metro tiled look of Windows 8. The theme is flashable to your device using ClockworkMod recovery. It’s worth noting that the theme is in beta, but there is a website with instructions for installing the mod. Apparently, the mod will work on the Asus Transformer and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets right now. The beta release supports tablets running Android 4.0 and there are widgets under development just for the mod. If you don’t own either of the two tablets specified for support right now, another theme is coming that will support more tablets. The Metro UI theme will change your your homescreen and notifications panel. This release is a work in progress and many other things like Music widgets, bug...

Remove/Disable Facebook birthdays from Android calender

Android Phones have a great calendar app built in that can pull from your Google Calendar, Exchange, PC Sync, Facebook and more. I love having all my events from different calendar's combined into my phone's calendar, but if when you combine Facebook's calendar, then your phone gets flooded with birthdays, especially if you have many friends on Facebook you don't even know. Nearly every day in my calendar was flooded because of the birthdays and unable to distinguish my important events. If you are frustrated like me with these then, there's a way to fix this and it's actually fairly simple, just a couple of steps:- Go to Settings -> Accounts & sync Uncheck Facebook calendar (in my case it was Facebook inside Xperia). Then Open you Calendar app and go to Options -> More -> My Calendars Select synced, not visible Press Ok and all that junk is gone. Note:- You might need to delete all events in some Android Phones to delete...

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin Supports Voice Based Menu Commands in form of HUD

Mark Shuttleworth founder of Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux reports in his blog that a new Head-Up Display, or HUD computer menu system, will be implemented into the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS release scheduled to go live in April. The new HUD feature will replace current menus in Unity applications, providing a faster way to access menus in applications. Instead of clicking through menus, users simply type the command they require in a search box. According to Shuttleworth, the new HUD can actually learn the actions a user most often requests and prioritize options for commands based on past use. HUD also covers system functionality, meaning users can play and pause music, or even change their IM status or go offline without having to access Skype directly, as an example. "It’s a way for you to express your intent and have the application respond appropriately," he writes. "We think of it as 'beyond interface,' it’s the 'intenterface.' This co...

Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” sets to dethrone Ubuntu as top opensource OS

In past few months, Linux Mint is on a road to surpass Ubuntu as the most popular Linux operating. According to an open source ranking website DistroWatch, Linux Mint has already topped Ubuntu as the top Linux distro. Why, ? The reason is because the Mint is giving users a choice between old and new interfaces. According to Clem(Maintainer of Linux Mint) Mint is one of the last distro to support Gnome 2.32 which has been abandoned by major top distros like Ubuntu, Fedora etc.. The new interfaces on those systems have mostly focused on mobile metaphor instead of the traditional desktop metaphor. The Ubuntu's answer is controversial Unity which has been rejected by most users as is the Gnome Shell which is used by other distros. Linux Mint here took a very unique turn, they have rejected implementing Unity and have focused on Gnome Shell and MATE. The Gnome Shell is modified by Mint developers with MGSE(Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) to make Gnome Shell lo...

Add "copy to" and "move to" options in right click.

It is hard to move or copy a file/s or folder/s to specific location. There is a option called "Send to" on context menu but it has some limitation. You can send content through it just few locations like.. My Documents, Floppy Disk etc. If You can add "Copy to" and "Move to" options on Right click(context menu) then it will increase your file/folder transfer facility. You can Copy and Move your content anywhere on your machine through Right click(context menu). I have described a registry trick following here. Copy-paste following text in notepad and save it with .reg extension. Then just merge/run it. You will get 2 new options on your Right click(context menu). Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex \ContextMenuHandlers] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex \ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To] @="{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex...

Restrict PC Shutdown

Both Vista and Windows XP let you take control of preventing a user not to shutdown the machine by editing the group policy. For example if your friend is using your computer and you went somewhere ( and you have still some unsaved document left) and he shutdowns the pc without saving them…you loose a good amount of data. ( Trust me I have lost one whole blog post and project code at same time ). This is what you can do Restrict PC Shutdown * Type gpedit.msc in run dialog box [ WIN KEY + R ] * This will open Group Policy Editor. Now there are two things in it, Computer Configuration and User Configuration * Click on User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Task Bar * Now look for “remove and prevent access to shutdown command” * Double Click and Enable it. * Exit the group policy editor. This setting removes the Shut Down option from the Start menu and disables the Shut Down button on the Windows Security dialog box, which appears when you press C...

Change Drive Letters in Windows XP

When you add drives to your computer, such as an extra hard drive, a CD drive, or a storage device that corresponds to a drive, Windows automatically assigns letters to the drives. However, this assignment might not suit your system; for example, you might have mapped a network drive to the same letter that Windows assigns to a new drive. When you want to change drive letters, follow these steps: · Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. · Under Computer Management, click Disk Management. In the right pane, you'll see your drives listed. CD-ROM drives are listed at the bottom of the pane. · Right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths. · Click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the drive letter you want to assign, and then click OK. Do Not Highlight Newly Installed Programs Tired of that annoying little window that pops up to tell you that new software is installed? If it gets in...
